September wrap up & Knowledge Day

On September 3rd, we welcomed our RPS school community for another year of doing what we do best - learning, solving, creating, playing, making friends, and exceling!

Knowledge Day is a long-standing tradition at our school, marking the first school day of the year. One of the best parts was watching the Grade 1s and Grade 7/8s exchange gifts -- a rose for the soon-to-be graduates to represent a beautiful chapter soon coming to a close, and a new one about to blossom. And a school bell for the little ones to represent the start of their elementary journey. It really was sweet watching them acknowledge each other.

The month kicked off with students studying current environmental issues and completing Environmental Issues projects. By the end of the project, students will have raised their awareness of environmental issues, taken responsibility for simple, everyday actions that help protect our environment, and recognized the importance of contributing to a cleaner, healthier world.

We also supplemented our environmental learning with a trip to Toronto Zoo. Each class headed off with their teacher to the interesting lands of Indo-Malaya, Africa, Eurasia...wherever their curiosity (and tired feet) took them. The sun was shining down on us that day and we couldn't have been in better spirits.

September is also dedicated to the theme of courage, which is embodied by our Canadian Hero, Terry Fox. Every year, students raise funds for cancer research and learn about the importance, and great reward, in never giving up. This year, a special prize was on the table...If our school reached our fundraising goal, the whole school gets an extra long pancake breakfast on pajama day! Well, we're proud to say that we actually doubled our fundraising goal. What could be a better way to start the Thanksgiving long weekend?

We also ended the month visiting our local library, getting to meet the Librarian who gave us a tour of the rows and rows of books. Students are in the process of getting their library cards and are eagerly awaiting their first official library visit in October.

Here's to another incredible year at Roots with many exciting events and trips to come.
